Valve Biomechanics

Normally, the aortic valve (AV) opens once during each cardiac cycle, for approximately 35% of the cycle time, which corresponds to systolic contraction and ejection through the AV into the aorta. Cardiovascular support with a LVAD decreases the duration of AV opening, which increases the time the valve spends under high transvalvular pressure loading.
